On September 7, we sent the following email regarding the upcoming changes to our QuickBooks Desktop product lineup. Accounting is the one department you absolutely do not want to do something like that with.Editor’s note: Here’s a factsheet we’ve developed so you can talk with your clients about these changes. The under side of the bus is not a pretty thing to look up upon after being thrown under it. All you will find is the online articles specifically saying don't do this. If some support person told you over the phone ok it's working so you're good to go, good luck finding them again in the future if it goes south. If you are lucky, it will never happen, but be prepared for it if you put that in production. It may be your last conversation at that employer depending on the severity of the problem it causes. You: That they can't help me because I figured out a way to make it run in a way they specifically tell you not to do. You: Boss, our accounting files are corrupted, we're going to have to restore a backup and all of today's work is lost. It's likely unsupported for a reason (my guess would be potential data corruption), and if it blows up in the future, it's on you for having set it up that way. Not trying to rain on your parade, but just because you can do a thing doesn't mean you should do a thing.

But it’s also fair and respectable to decide not to do it this way
#QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP ACCOUNTANT 2021 HOW TO#
I’m definitely of the opinion that a NAS is a perfectly legitimate place to store quickbooks files and a bloaty windows server is an unnecessary requirement, but I can only go on 10-15 years of doing this with previous versions of QB and finding out how to do it with a minor change to 2021, and testing with Intuit support. And which of us is ill-researched and weighing in exactly? But I do respect those who only do things by the book, that’s respectable.

I generally have no idea what I’m talking about.Īlso people are chiming in with warnings of “possible corruption” and creating a nonexistent scenario wherein i can’t restore to multiple saved versions of these files within minutes etc. Accountant edition handles it without additional pop up messages and issues.
#QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP ACCOUNTANT 2021 PRO#
Why Accountant edition? Our accounting department had always used accountant version, then tried Premier Pro when we upgraded to 2021, and that created a couple of problems, including it not liking multi-user mode so much. *Select “NO” and “don’t show again” unless you know you need it in your case.
#QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP ACCOUNTANT 2021 PORTABLE#
*You may see a message asking if you want to make a portable version. BE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX TO OPEN IN MULTI-USER MODE (Some guides tell you to add the entire line but it already exists, so just change the number from 0 to 1)Ĥ) Now start up quickbooks and open one of your company files that resides on the diskstation. Change NONRECOMMENDEDMODE to =1 and save the file.

This is the setup that worked after trial and error:ġ) Choose Quickbooks Accountant 2021 Desktop versionĢ) Get quickbooks started, updated if prompted, and activated, then close it.ģ) Edit each PC’s qbw.ini file in C:/ProgramData/Intuit/Quickbooks 2021/ All you do is change the existing line below. And there are instructions on editing the qbw.ini files, but many of the instructions are incomplete. Intuit will tell you that you must have this, and so will a few reseller support guides.
#QUICKBOOKS DESKTOP ACCOUNTANT 2021 PC#
It’s not necessary to have a Windows pc acting as server for this. I have been through quite a lot of work, researching on my own, and getting a wide array of conflicting opinions, then working with Quickbooks support on the phone, and I now have a working setup.

This guide was completed and tested and I was on the phone with Intuit support, so believe me, I’m not just saying this cavalierly. We tried this different ways and either had bugs and crashes or unusably slow performance. It *is* possible to have Quickbooks files stored on a Synology Diskstation *and* use multi-user mode.
